Meet the New Snow Leopard Cubs at Assiniboine Park Zoo!

This weekend, Assiniboine Park Zoo welcomes visitors to see its newest stars: a pair of eight-week-old snow leopard cubs.

These young males will be making their first public appearance after spending the past two months bonding with their mother, Baku, and father, Akar, and exploring their enclosure.

Allison Ginsburg, the zoo’s curator of animal care, expressed enthusiasm about the cubs’ debut. “They’ve had plenty of time to grow and strengthen while staying indoors with mom,” Ginsburg said. “We’re thrilled that they are coming outside just in time for the long weekend.”

As part of the zoo’s tradition for newborn animals, the public is invited to participate in naming the cubs through an online poll. Here are the name options:

  • For Cub #1:
    • Kaz: Short for Kazakhstan
    • Kuna: Meaning “good character” in Hindi
    • Kaash: Meaning “expression of a wish” in Russian
    • Kashi: Meaning “shining” in Hindi
  • For Cub #2:
    • Arka: Of Indian origin, meaning “sun”
    • Jixi: A city in China
    • Altai: A mountain range in Mongolia
    • Makalú: The fifth-highest mountain peak in the world, located in the Himalayas

The poll will close at noon on Tuesday, July 3, with the winning names announced the following day.

Additionally, the zoo will extend its hours until 8 p.m. on Sunday to accommodate the increased number of visitors.
