Despite the usual anticipation for predator sightings along the H4-1 route, the highlight was a herd of elephants crossing the road.
Redirected towards the H12 due to lion sightings, he found a male and female lion lying on the road, causing a traffic backlog as eager spectators gathered.
The male lion repeatedly attempted to court the lioness, only to face fierce rejection. Suddenly, he redirected his attention to the nearest car, launching an aggressive attack, seemingly to display bravery or vent frustration.
Fortunately, the occupants were unharmed and protected by closed windows. Although visibly shaken, they drove off safely.
Shortly after, amidst resumed normalcy, the male lion made another advance, this time towards an open-top safari vehicle. Quick reflexes of the guide averted disaster as the lion pounced, narrowly missing the car.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Williams-Wynn expressed profound shock at the lion’s unpredictability, emphasizing the importance of adhering to safety protocols during wildlife encounters.
He stressed the tourists’ commendable response, attributing their safety to their adherence to guidelines and avoidance of panic.
While mating lions are a common sight, the aggression displayed by the male lion was unprecedented, underscoring the need for caution and vigilance during such encounters.
“I’ve seen at least one pair every time I visit the park. A lion attacking and hitting a car – I’ve never seen such a thing, and am glad that I managed to document it,” remarked Williams-Wynn, highlighting the rarity and significance of the incident.
Despite the unnerving experience, Williams-Wynn concluded his safari by reflecting on the inherent unpredictability of wildlife encounters and the importance of respecting nature’s boundaries.
