In a remarkable underwater encounter off the coast of Cape Brett on New Zealand’s North Island, a 21-year-old diver named Ben Laurie faced an enigmatic sea creature resembling a massive ‘sea serpent,’ measuring an impressive 30 feet in length.
Despite his seasoned diving experience, this peculiar creature was entirely new to him, evoking both awe and intrigue. Captured on film amidst a backdrop of smaller marine life, the encounter showcased a captivating blend of terror and wonder.

Laurie, a diving enthusiast and advocate as an ambassador for the WildBlue dive shop, shared his astonishment at the unexpected sighting.
“We were diving there for kingfish, and we had plugged a couple, and then we were coming up from one of the dives when my friend saw this thing,” he recounted.
The creature’s dimensions, measuring about 33 feet long and nearly 1.6 feet wide, made it move with the tide effortlessly, creating an ethereal spectacle beneath the waves.
Despite his extensive diving background, Laurie confessed to being perplexed by this sea serpent-like entity. Admitting to his lack of prior knowledge, he mused, “I didn’t know what it was at the time, so it was quite confusing.”
Initially, he mistook the creature for a larger iteration of the stringy plankton clusters that he had previously encountered underwater, measuring around eight inches.
The mysterious creature has since been identified as a pyrosome, an intriguing floating colony comprised of thousands of sea squirts.
These marine organisms filter microscopic plant cells from the surrounding water as their primary source of sustenance.
Each squirt within the colony draws in water from the environment and expels filtered water from within.
While pyrosomes typically inhabit depths of around 2,000 meters, the presence of this creature near the shallows is uncommon.
Laurie speculated that the creature’s appearance in shallower waters might be attributed to sickness or injury, as pyrosomes typically reside at greater depths to evade predation by fish, owing to their delicate texture.
A noted scientist characterized this sighting as an extraordinary, once-in-a-lifetime event.
