In the wilderness of South Luangwa National Park, Zambia, a heart-wrenching struggle unfolded between a starving lioness and a young elephant calf, captured by wildlife photographer NJ Wight.

The emaciated lioness, lacking the support of her pride, attempted to take down the hefty elephant, desperate for a meal.

The scene was one of survival, as the lioness attacked the unsuspecting elephant calf in the Nsefu sector of the park.

However, the young pachyderm fought back fiercely, using its size advantage to pin the lioness to the ground before driving her away.

Despite her valiant effort, the lioness was found lifeless the following day, her weakened state and lack of sustenance proving fatal.
