In an awe-inspiring display reminiscent of a Hollywood action scene, a courageous herd of buffalo, led by their alpha, launched a daring rescue mission to save their vulnerable calves from a relentless lion attack.
The heart-pounding encounter unfolded in Chitake Springs, located within Zimbabwe’s Mana Pools National Park, as captured by 62-year-old David Pinkernell, a retired Hewlett Packard employee who shares a passion for wildlife photography.

Pinkernell, accompanied by his wife Carrie and longtime friends Andrea, Brad, and Leslie, embarked on an unforgettable safari adventure.
Describing the harrowing scene, Pinkernell recounts, “Our fantastic guide, Nick Murry of Bushlife Safaris, positioned us perfectly to witness a pride of 30 lions converging on 300 thirsty Cape Buffalo charging towards the only available water source for miles around.
We stood on the edge of a cliff, alone and unaware that we were about to witness something.”

As the buffalo descended upon the waterhole, a fierce battle ensued between the lions and the determined herd.
Amidst the chaos, adult buffalo bravely attempted to rescue their calves. After approximately ten intense minutes, the buffalo regrouped and retreated up the hillside, with the two male lions abandoning their initial kills to pursue the wounded calves.
Tragically, despite the herd’s valiant efforts, the lions succeeded in targeting and killing two of the vulnerable calves.

Pinkernell admits to feeling a surge of adrenaline and emotion, acknowledging the harsh realities of nature unfolding before his eyes.
Reflecting on their safari experiences, Pinkernell expresses gratitude for the rare sightings, crediting Africa Adventure Company for orchestrating their unforgettable journey amidst the challenges posed by the pandemic.
Despite the loss witnessed during their safari, Pinkernell and his companions cherish the opportunity to witness nature’s raw beauty and the instinctual behaviors that define the animal kingdom.
