At first, Polito resisted our attempts to help him. It took several hours of gentle patience for him to understand our intentions were kind. Eventually, he allowed us to approach and we took him to the veterinary hospital. Even there, Polito remained on edge, likely due to his harsh experiences living on the streets, which made him wary and required the veterinary staff to handle him with great care.
Unfortunately, Polito was diagnosed with a transmissible venereal tumor (TVT), a condition often seen in stray animals. To recover, he needed multiple chemotherapy sessions. However, his healing required more than medical treatment alone.
Polito’s spirit was deeply wounded. He was scared, withdrawn, and seemed to bear the weight of abandonment. At the Servivet Veterinary Clinic, he initially refused to eat. His hemoglobin levels were worryingly low, and no amount of regular food would entice him to eat. To ensure he received the necessary nourishment, we fed him using a syringe, carefully administering special A/D food meant for frail dogs, always with tenderness and care.
Then, a change began. Polito slowly started eating, bit by bit, until his appetite returned in full force. With it came a hint of happiness. He sought out the company of others, wagged his tail at familiar faces, and cherished the affection he had never experienced before. The sadness in his eyes began to fade away.
Under the careful watch of compassionate specialists, Polito started his chemotherapy treatments. A series of at least six sessions was planned to tackle the tumors. Throughout this process, his bravery shone brightly.
Many have inquired about his condition, and we are delighted to share positive updates: the treatment is proving effective. Some of his tumors have already diminished, relieving him of pain. His strength is gradually returning, and he’s once again on his feet, slowly regaining the weight he had lost.
Though Polito still has a road ahead of him, he is no longer alone. With ongoing care, love, and support, we believe he will fully recover and finally experience the life every dog deserves—one filled with security, love, and hope.
