This elephant, previously orphaned and now roaming freely, had reportedly endured an attack by lions, resulting in significant bite and puncture wounds across its body.
With precision and careful planning, the rescue team executed a thorough procedure involving immobilization, assessment, and treatment to ensure the well-being of the injured elephant.
Approaching on foot, the team skillfully administered a tranquilizer using a dan inject dart system, delivering 10 milligrams of Etorphine to the elephant, leading to a controlled descent after five minutes.
Throughout the process, strategic positioning of the trunk and ear aided in proper breathing and temperature regulation.
The examination revealed extensive injuries, including bite marks and infected puncture wounds covering the elephant’s body.
Notably, the tail suffered a laceration at its base, resulting in the severance of the blood supply and subsequent ischemic necrosis.
Acting swiftly, the team amputated the necrotic tail and meticulously cleansed all wounds using a solution of Hydrogen Peroxide and clean water.
Following this, a Tincture of Iodine was applied, and a protective layer of wetted green clay was added to expedite the healing process.
Medical intervention continued as long-acting antibiotics were administered through intramuscular injection, and Dexamethasone Hcl was delivered via a prominent ear vein to prevent infection, address inflammation, and support the overall recovery of the injured elephant.
After successful treatment, the team reversed the anesthesia by administering Diprenorphine at three times the original Etorphine dose.
The resilient elephant regained consciousness and stood up, marking a significant milestone in its journey towards complete recovery.
