In Houston, Texas, elementary school teacher Caleb Schaffer found himself crossing paths with an unlikely visitor every morning: a stray dog named Clive. This is the touching tale of Clive, a dog whose patience won him a second chance at life.
It all began when Schaffer arrived at school one day to find a dog sitting near the entrance, tails wagging frantically. Despite being pressed for time, the sight of the hopeful dog lingered in Schaffer’s mind throughout the day. “He was sitting right outside the main door, and his tail started thumping when he saw me,” Schaffer recounted to The Dodo.

Once classes were over, Schaffer returned to find the dog gone, scared off by local shelter staff’s attempts to catch him. However, the determined pup was back at the school the very next morning, repeating his routine.
By the third day, Schaffer was resolved to help the dog. Clive, who appeared skinny and in poor health, clearly needed attention. Schaffer took him to his car, brought him home, and asked his wife to care for the dog until he finished work for the day.

Later, Schaffer reached out to various rescue groups, but they were all full. Understanding the urgency of Clive’s situation, he decided to take the dog to a nearby animal shelter. “I figured some basic vet care at the shelter was better than nothing. He was really suffering,” Schaffer explained.
Named Clive, the dog’s story was shared on Facebook, quickly catching the eye of Lucky Lab Rescue and Adoption. They soon found Clive a foster home, bringing him the care he desperately needed.

Schaffer often shares Clive’s story with his students, turning it into a teachable moment about the importance of helping stray animals. “There are so many strays everywhere here. It’s given me an opportunity to talk about spaying, neutering, heartworm prevention, and the reality of shelters,” Schaffer remarked.
Although it’s unclear if Clive has been adopted since moving into foster care, one thing is certain: he is now a content and healthy dog, surrounded by love and care.
