In December of the previous year, Shukuru faced health challenges while at Ithumba, prompting her to move to the Nairobi Nursery for closer monitoring and effective treatment.

With dedicated veterinarians and accessible medical resources, she received the care needed for her recovery.

Having regained her strength, Shukuru joyfully joins eleven other orphans at Umani Springs, providing her with the companionship and natural environment crucial for her well-being.

As Shukuru conquered health struggles, considerations were made for her future. Not fully recovered and missing her older orphan friends who had moved to Reintegration Units in Tsavo, Shukuru longed for familiar company and excitement.

Umani Springs, designed for elephants with physical challenges, became her new haven, offering comfort, abundant food, and water year-round.

Shukuru’s journey to Umani Springs occurred at 2:30 am, ensuring empty roads and cool temperatures.

She walked in without hesitation despite previous journeys in the elephant transporter truck.

However, upon arrival, Shukuru displayed initial confusion in the unfamiliar location. The Umani orphans, led by Lima Lima, welcomed her with curiosity and gentle touches, making her a part of their group.

Shukuru, born in 2009, has adapted well to her new home despite her smaller size. Strong bonds have formed with fellow orphans, and signs of improvement in her condition are evident.
