Scarlett Johansson Reflects on Her Journey with Skincare and Self-Esteem

Last Update:

Scarlett Johansson, co-founder of the skincare brand The Outset, recently opened up about her struggles with acne during her twenties.

The 39-year-old movie star shared her experiences in an interview with People magazine, reflecting on how acne affected her self-esteem, especially during high-profile events like red-carpet appearances.

“I still look back at photos of me on the red carpet in my twenties, and I’m like, ‘I remember that pimple,'” Johansson recalled. She explained that stress from filming would often trigger breakouts, which made her feel self-conscious.

“It was terrible. I would cover my acne before getting to the makeup chair, so I didn’t feel so exposed. It really affects how you feel about yourself, and you want to scrub it away,” she added.

Johansson tried various acne treatments during that time, including peels, masks, and resurfacing polishes. However, she eventually realized these products were too harsh for her skin.

Johansson launched The Outset with co-founder Kate Foster in March of this year. The brand is vegan and cruelty-free, featuring six products, including their latest release, the Exfoliating Caffeine Micro Polish.

The Outset’s product line includes a refreshing niacinamide night cream, smoothing vitamin C eye and expression lines cream, gentle micellar antioxidant cleanser, firming vegan collagen prep serum, and nourishing squalane daily moisturizer.

When asked what sets her brand apart from other celebrity beauty brands, Johansson said, “I always anticipate that there’s going to be some level of skepticism because I’ve experienced it in my movie life, too.

But I feel confident about our products – they’re just so reliable. The transparency of what’s in the line and what it’s doing sets it apart.”

In addition to her skincare endeavors, Johansson shared that she enjoys a “deep, painful massage” to relax and is meticulous about organization.

“I’m very organized. I tend to organize other people’s belongings, which my daughter and my husband have told me multiple times to stop doing. They’re not fans of it,” she admitted.

Johansson is married to SNL star and co-head writer Colin Jost, 40. The couple began dating in 2017, engaged in 2019, and married in October 2020.
