Scarlett Johansson Transitions from Superhero to Star of The Sea Change

Last Update:

Scarlett Johansson is stepping away from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to take on a new role in The Sea Change drama.

The film will mark the directorial debut of Kristin Scott Thomas, an Oscar-nominated actress known for her performances in The English Patient and Four Weddings and a Funeral.

The Sea Change is based on the 1959 novel by Elizabeth Jane Howard and follows the story of a prominent London playwright named Emmanuel and his ailing wife, Lillian.

The couple grapples with the lingering grief of their deceased daughter, Sarah, which strains their marriage. Their relationship turns unexpectedly during a trip to a secluded Greek island.

While it is widely believed that Johansson will portray Lillian, official details regarding her character have yet to be confirmed.

Kristin Scott Thomas initially expressed her desire to direct and star in the film in 2017. Mark Strong and Anya Taylor-Joy were also discussing joining the cast then, but the project did not progress.

The screenplay for The Sea Change was penned by Rebecca Lenkiewicz, with Thorston Schumacher as the producer.

Scarlett Johansson is well-known for her role as Natasha Romanoff, or Black Widow, in several Marvel films, including Avengers: Endgame (2019) and Black Widow (2021). Recently, she has hinted at exploring opportunities in film production.

In an interview with Collider, Johansson shared her motivation for moving into production, stating, “I have worked for 30 years, which is insane when I say it out loud. I think I just understand the efficiency of how productions run and how you thin the fat on a production and make things well-oiled.”
