Scarlett Johansson, known for her distinctively husky voice, recalls being turned down for roles as a young performer because of her unique sound.
The Hollywood actress started her career at nine years old with her debut in North. Originally, she aspired to work in musical theater, but casting directors repeatedly rejected her due to her deep voice.
Reflecting on those early experiences, Scarlett told Candis magazine, “As a little kid, I trained as a singer because I wanted to do musical theater, but my voice was so deep that I couldn’t get cast!” Instead, she decided to pursue acting.
“I’d go on auditions as this cute blonde kid, then open my mouth and say [in a deep voice], ‘Buy this product, it’s fantastic!’” she added, noting how casting directors often asked if she had a sore throat.
Though her voice has softened over time, it’s now widely recognized as her signature sound. “I think people have gotten used to it,” she said. “I saw somewhere that it’s now referred to as my trademark husky voice!”
Since 2019, Scarlett has been engaged to comedian and Saturday Night Live co-head writer Colin Jost.
She expressed enthusiasm when asked about the possibility of working together: “He’s a wonderful comedy writer, so I’d feel confident working with anything he wrote. He’s very light, quick, and relaxed—humor is important to me. I grew up in a very funny household, so I’ve always been drawn to that in a partner.”
Scarlett was married twice, first to actor Ryan Reynolds from 2008 to 2011 and later to journalist-turned-art curator Romain Dauriac from 2014 to 2017.
