Scarlett Johansson Opens Up About Being Typecast in Hollywood

Scarlett Johansson, the 36-year-old Hollywood star, recently revealed that she felt ‘hypersexualized’ during her teenage years and early twenties in the entertainment industry.

She spoke about being typecast into specific roles, which she attributes to being shaped by a “bunch of dudes” in Hollywood.

Johansson gained fame with her role in the 2003 film Lost in Translation, playing Charlotte at 18.

However, she had her first leading role much earlier, playing Manny in Manny & Lo at 12. Despite her early success, Johansson said in an interview with The Sun that she felt pressured into a specific image.

“When I was working in my early twenties, and even my late teens, I felt that I got somehow typecast as hypersexualized, which I guess at the time seemed OK to everyone,” Johansson told The Sun.

She also noted that while this wasn’t part of her narrative, it was constructed by a male-dominated industry.

Johansson’s breakthrough role came at age 19 when she starred in Lost in Translation alongside Bill Murray.

Since then, she has become one of Hollywood’s most recognized stars. But the actress believes the industry has evolved.

She highlighted that the current environment is far more welcoming for women, with many opportunities for diverse roles and career growth.

The actress got married last year to Colin Jost, 39, host of NBC’s Saturday Night Live. In October, the couple had a scaled-down ceremony at their home in the New York hamlet of Palisades.

Colin Jost was hosting Weekend Update on Saturday Night Live, a role previously held by Seth Meyers, who attended the wedding. Johansson said the pandemic wedding was “beautiful” and “intimate.”

Johansson’s previous marriages include Ryan Reynolds, whom she married in 2008 and divorced in 2011, and French ad executive Romain Dauriac, with whom she shares a daughter, Dorothy.

The couple got married in 2014 but split up in 2016. Johansson began dating Colin Jost mid-2017, eventually tying the knot in 2020.

Reflecting on her journey, Johansson noted the changing dynamics in Hollywood, indicating that the industry is heading in a more inclusive direction with better opportunities for women.
