Bullmastiff Brutus Brings His Cherished Toy to Soothe His Newborn Sibling

A Bullmastiff named Brutus from Northern California has a touching way of comforting his baby brother, Kayden.

Brutus, known for his playful nature and love of destroying toys, has one toy he cherishes: a fluffy yellow ball. Whenever Kayden cries, Brutus offers his prized possession to help soothe the infant.

Brutus’ owner, Bonnie Michalek, explained that despite his usual tendency to shred toys in minutes, Brutus has preserved his beloved “fluffball” since they brought him home in 2016. “It’s the only toy Brutus won’t destroy,” Michalek said.

She affectionately calls Brutus her “first child” and shared that their bond grew more robust when the family moved to a larger home, perfect for a big dog like Brutus.

Eleven weeks ago, the Michaleks welcomed their first human child, Kayden. Despite initial concerns about how Brutus would react to the new family member, Michalek was confident in Brutus’ gentle nature. “He’s always loved kids,” she noted. “He gets excited every time he hears children laughing outside.”

Remarkably, Brutus seemed to sense Michalek’s pregnancy before she did. “Brutus knew I was pregnant before I realized it,” Michalek recalled. Brutus, typically content in his crate, refused to leave her side on nights her husband was away. At first, she thought Brutus was stubborn, but later realized he was trying to protect her.

Brutus stayed with Michalek’s parents to ease the transition when Kayden was born. Knowing Brutus would want alone time with her, Michalek made sure to give him attention before introducing him to Kayden.

“He completely ignored my husband when he met Kayden for the first time,” she said. “He wanted to kiss and cuddle the baby right away.”

From that moment, Brutus has been a devoted guardian, never letting Kayden out of his sight. When Kayden cries, Brutus brings him the cherished fluffball, believing it will comfort his baby brother as it does him. Michalek commented, If the fluffball makes him happy, it will work for Kayden, too.”

The Michalek family looks forward to many future adventures with Brutus and Kayden. Michalek shared, “We go hiking at our cabin every summer, and Brutus has loved it since he was a puppy. I can’t wait for Kayden to join us.”

As they grow together, Brutus discovers new toys in the house that aren’t meant for dogs. Hopefully, one day, Kayden will share his toys with Brutus, just as Brutus has shared his beloved fluffball.
