However, their relief was short-lived when they learned Bella had already been adopted by another family.
Rebecca Jones, Bella’s owner, was devastated. She appealed to the shelter staff to release Bella to her, but they were bound by Nebraska law, which allows animals without identifiable owners to be adopted after 72 hours in the shelter’s care.
Since Bella had been surrendered without documentation, she was legally available for adoption before Rebecca arrived.
Rebecca expressed her frustration in a statement to WOWT, saying the shelter was not responsive, despite her willingness to provide proof of ownership or visit daily to check for Bella.
Feeling the weight of the dilemma, the Nebraska Humane Society reached out to Bella’s new adoptive family. They explained the situation and asked if Bella could be returned to her original family.
In a remarkable gesture of kindness and understanding, the adopters agreed, allowing Bella to be reunited with the Jones family.
The shelter later shared on Facebook: “The new adopters were gracious and kind, and while it was difficult, they agreed to relinquish the dog back to the shelter so the original owners could take the dog home.
We are sorry for the way the situation played out, but truly appreciate that the dog is back home and the adopting family is willing to open their doors to a new dog.”
