Stories of animal rescue often tug at our heartstrings, but the harsh conditions complicating these rescues are sometimes overlooked. Many stray dogs never find a helping hand, and tough situations can make rescue challenging.
Fortunately, for one puppy in Georgia, luck was on her side when a deputy discovered her abandoned by the roadside.
While on duty in the sweltering Georgia heat, Deputy Earl Hanners noticed an unusual sight—a cardboard box left by the roadside.
Upon taking a closer look, Hanners discovered a small puppy inside the box, struggling in the oppressive heat. Realizing the gravity of the situation, he grew concerned about who could have left her there.
In an interview with The Dodo, Hanners explained, “The box was sealed, but someone passing by noticed it, stopped, and discovered the puppy inside. They opened the box, gave her some water, and called 911.”
At the time, Hanners was preoccupied with a car accident call, unable to stay with the puppy, but he couldn’t stop thinking about her. As soon as he could, he returned with a plan.
“I told the gentleman there to call off animal control. I decided to take the puppy to a vet myself,” he mentioned.
True to his word, Hanners came back to get the puppy, eventually named Bridget, and made her comfortable in his patrol car. With food, water, and much-needed attention, Bridget began to feel at ease.
Feeling a connection with her and recognizing her need for a caring home, Hanners decided to adopt her into his family.
Bridget was welcomed into an already lively household, as Hanners regularly fostered and rescued dogs through a local organization, Hounds in Pounds.
Before meeting her new furry companions, Bridget received a thorough check-up and vaccinations from a Georgia vet.
Once declared healthy, she joined her new home, quickly fitting in with Hanners’ other dogs. Hanners shared, “We introduced her to the pack last night. It usually only takes a day or two before everyone settles in.”
Through his kind actions, Hanners not only extended his community service but also gave Bridget a safe home, filled with love and the promise of a better future.
His kindness turned what could have been a story of abandonment into one of hope and renewal.
