Instances of courage often capture our imagination, especially when they involve someone at risk being saved from harm. Even though bravery is part of the everyday duties of police officers, firefighters, and rescuers, their noble deeds never fail to leave an impact.
Such a moment of courage occurred at the Houston Botanic Garden in Texas when a tiny Chihuahua found itself stuck beneath a bridge spanning Sims Bayou.
This little dog was in a risky spot, and the rescue operation was carried out with determination and precision.

While enjoying their visit to the garden, some observant guests noticed the small dog perched on a concrete beam below a bridge.
Concerned for its safety, they quickly informed the garden staff, who then called for assistance. Two Houston Fire Department stations promptly responded to the call for help.
“We love knowing that everyone and everything in and around the garden is in good hands with these trained community helpers on the job,” the garden staff expressed in a Facebook post.
Upon arrival, firefighters wasted no time. One brave firefighter didn’t hesitate to enter the water, swimming towards the frightened little dog.

Despite the Chihuahua’s constant barking as the firefighter approached, the startled pet leapt into the bayou, frantically swimming toward the other side.
Onlookers expressed their alarm, but the firefighter, resolute in his mission, dived back in and eventually managed to secure the dog in his arms.
Reportedly, the rescue wasn’t easy. KHOU noted the small dog tried biting the firefighter’s hands and arms as he kept her above the water.
A video shared on Facebook shows the dog, later identified as Burbie, continuing to bark anxiously even after reaching safety on dry land.

With Burbie rescued, firefighters and bystanders alike celebrated. Fate had led Judy Hausler, a veterinary technician, to be present at the garden. She willingly offered to take Burbie home for the night and to help reunite her with her family.
“It just worked out that I was there, and I said, ‘I’m going to take the dog, and I’ll find it a home,’” Judy shared with KHOU.
The very next day, Judy was able to successfully reunite Burbie with her worried family.
“She was emotional here, because when they jumped out of the car and I had her in my arms, wrapped in this blanket I let her keep, they were all crying,” she remembered.

Filled with gratitude, the family shared their appreciation.
“We are very grateful for the efforts of the first responders and of everyone involved to help us bring our baby home.

I don’t think there’s anything that we could possibly do to repay the efforts of those involved, but I will say that I am very grateful,” expressed one of Burbie’s owners.
This incident stretched over four days, partly because Burbie wasn’t microchipped. Her owners vowed to have her chipped immediately after their joyful reunion to avoid any future separations.
