Dogs never forget the compassionate souls who help mend their broken hearts after abandonment. Cash, a deaf Great Dane, is one such dog who was left alone in an empty house, hungry and thirsty, until a caring retired woman found him and was moved by his plight. Emaciated and fearful, Cash wanted nothing more than to hide away from the world.

Eager to give him a new beginning, the rescuer posted an online advertisement seeking someone to foster Cash and help rebuild his lost trust.

Heather, upon seeing the ad, felt compelled to assist and offered to welcome Cash into her California home for a short stay.

When Cash was brought to Heather, his condition was alarming. “I was speechless with the size of him and just really how scared he was,” she shared with GeoBeats Animals. Cash was so afraid of people that he would freeze and cower at any sign of company.

Heather and her family went above and beyond, even learning how to care for a deaf dog, to ensure Cash felt safe and loved. Initially, he was unsure how to play with the toys offered to him and uneasy around the other pets.

A frightful incident over food prompted them to feed him separately and adjust his routines to ease his stress.

Despite these challenges, Heather’s family showered Cash with affection, patiently nurturing him back to health. Gradually, he began to trust again, discovering that those around him truly cared, unlike his previous owners.

Three months passed, and Cash had transformed. He was even starting to interact with Heather’s other dogs, a feat once unimaginable.

By then, Heather and her family had grown attached to Cash and decided he should become a permanent part of their family.

In return for his new life, Cash expressed his gratitude with tokens of affection, often presenting toys as gifts to Heather. Though he has blossomed in his new home, some old fears still linger.

Men in baseball caps unsettle him, possibly reminding him of past mistreatment. Understanding this, the family requests cap-wearers remove their hats when near Cash.

Still, these fears don’t overshadow Cash’s joy. He cherishes time with his family and loves being close. Exercise is another of his delights, joining Heather’s husband on daily runs ranging from three to six miles.
