Gilbert, a small Chihuahua with a big heart, has faced the challenge of homelessness more than once. Most recently, he was taken back to the animal shelter just three days after being adopted due to making the other pet in the household jealous. Once again, Gilbert was on the lookout for a permanent and loving home.
As if by destiny, Aimee Burton, a caring dog trainer from San Diego, California, discovered Gilbert on a shelter’s online listing. She was immediately drawn to him. Unfortunately, she found out he had already been adopted by another family.
However, three days later, Aimee received a surprising call from the shelter. Gilbert had been brought back, needing a new home once more after the other household pet didn’t warm up to him. Wasting no time, Aimee welcomed Gilbert into her life with open arms.
While Gilbert’s history is largely unknown, there’s no denying his resilience. The little dog, weighing just 4.8 pounds, was found wandering the streets of Lancaster, California, showcasing his survival instincts. Reflecting on his past, Aimee commented, “There’s coyotes and foxes and lots of wildlife. It’s kind of out there. The fact that he survived was pretty crazy.”
Upon arriving at Aimee’s home, Gilbert was understandably cautious. The scars of his past were apparent, but with Aimee’s patience and care, he slowly began to open up. She carefully introduced him to her other dogs and provided him with the attention he needed to feel secure.
As time passed, Gilbert’s true nature emerged, full of life and happiness. Although he had some health issues—like knee problems, a collapsing trachea, and dental complications—he embraced his new life with enthusiasm. Aimee noticed some charming peculiarities about Gilbert, such as his dislike for grass and preference for dirt and pavement. Despite physical limitations, this spirited Chihuahua wasn’t hesitant to playfully engage with his doggy siblings, displaying his playful toughness.
Gilbert’s unique traits only made Aimee adore him more. One of her daily delights is waking him up to see his bright eyes and cheerful smile, ready to face another day with joy, regardless of his age and health challenges. While he might not be as energetic as his younger companions, Gilbert is undeniably a cherished part of the pack. When unable to accompany them on walks, he patiently waits on the porch, eagerly watching for their return.
These days, Gilbert enjoys the comfort and love he always deserved, often curling up in a cozy blanket near Aimee. After a tough start in life, he has finally found the warmth and care he needed, proving just how impactful Aimee’s dedication has been to granting him a second chance. “He loves to be in comfort. He always wants to be on a blanket or under a blanket,” shares Aimee.
Thanks to her unwavering commitment, Gilbert is now thriving, happy, and cherished in his forever home.
