Charming Bears Return: Connecticut Family Welcomes Annual Visit from Playful Mama Bear and Her Cubs

Last Update:

A black bear and her adorable cubs excite a Connecticut neighborhood every summer as they splash in pools and explore garages during their much-anticipated annual visit.

For the past six years, this bear family has become a beloved part of the community in Farmington. The matriarch, easily recognized by her double tags, brings her cubs to enjoy the local amenities, including pools, trampolines, and even the occasional snack from residents’ garages.

A resident, Michael Costello, shared, “She comes down every year. One mama bear and her cubs. I know it’s the same bear because she’s double-tagged. It’s one mama bear who’s raised several generations of cubs. She has four cubs this year.”

In a delightful video, one cub can be seen paddling on a half-submerged pool cover before being joined by a sibling. The baby bears soak themselves in the water, emerging covered in browned leaves.

Meanwhile, the mama bear and another cub are busy digging into wood chips outside a garden shed. The two water-loving cubs later join them.

Another adventurous cub follows suit, diving underwater with just its ears and nose visible, before rolling around in the wood chips. But the exploration doesn’t stop there—the bears head into a garage searching for food.

Michael notes that the bear is quite at home in the neighborhood, sometimes even venturing into his house for bird feed and peanut butter from his pantry.

The bear family has also used his swimming pool and a neighbor’s trampoline and has been spotted sitting on porches alongside resident cats.

Michael, 24, a freelance animator, remarked, “I think that a lot of the neighbors aren’t as scared of the bear as they should be. There are rumors that someone is feeding it dog food. I don’t think the bear will attack anyone—but they shouldn’t feed it.

Everyone has a different relationship with the bear. She comes to my garage to take food, and with my neighbors, she just sits on their porch with their cat. She’s come into my garage four times now, she’s used my pool. She’s part of the neighborhood.”
