Robin Wagner of Burlington, Vermont, and her boyfriend had been searching for the perfect dog when they stumbled upon Blaze’s adoption profile online. For Robin, it was love at first sight. A German Shepherd/Greyhound mix, Blaze seemed like the perfect fit.

A Series of Unexpected Challenges

“We didn’t even know about the teeth before he came home. That was a glorious surprise,” Robin shared with GeoBeats Animals.

But Blaze’s teeth were just the beginning. While his sunken eyes suggested possible vision issues, the couple was initially told that Blaze didn’t have any major sight problems. A visit to a veterinary ophthalmologist soon revealed otherwise—Blaze was completely blind in his right eye and required surgery to try to save his vision in the left.

Unfortunately, the surgery was unsuccessful. Two weeks later, Blaze began walking into objects, and Robin rushed him back to the ophthalmologist. Blaze had lost all vision and was now completely blind.

Adjusting to Life Without Sight

Despite his blindness, Blaze adapted with remarkable grace. The family decided to have his right eye surgically removed due to recurring infections. While Robin admitted to being more affected by the change than Blaze himself, her resilient pup adjusted quickly to his new reality.

“It has taken a long time to get Blaze healthy,” Robin explained. When they first adopted him, Blaze weighed only 50 pounds. With proper care and love, he now weighs a healthy 80 pounds.

Rebuilding Confidence

Blindness presented new challenges for Blaze, particularly with his confidence. He became anxious and reactive, requiring intensive training to help him feel secure in his surroundings.

Robin and her boyfriend worked closely with a trainer, developing ways to communicate with Blaze to ease his anxiety. While the process was demanding, it proved deeply rewarding.

“Obviously, we didn’t anticipate the number of challenges we would face after we adopted Blaze. But given the chance to do it all over again, I wouldn’t change a thing. He’s my very best friend, and I count my lucky stars every single day for him,” Robin shared.

Adding a unique touch to Blaze’s story is Satin, the family’s cat, who has become Blaze’s guide. Using meows and chirps, Satin helps Blaze navigate the home, stopping him from bumping into furniture—or her!

“Every time he’d be walking towards her, she would meow. She would meow, and he would stop and redirect himself,” Robin told People.

While Satin isn’t the cuddliest of cats, her thoughtful guidance shows the bond she shares with Blaze.
