Video Black Bear Breaks Into Lake Tahoe Apartment for a Snack and Nap

Last Update:

A black bear recently made itself at home in a Lake Tahoe apartment, helping itself to snacks from the pantry before settling down for a nap in the bedroom. The bear was caught on a Ring video entering the apartment while the owner, Brian Sumner, was on a boat around 11:30 am on Monday.

The footage shows the bear roaming through the living room before it heads straight for the kitchen pantry, where it finds a selection of snacks. It eventually chose peanuts and chips but failed to get into the fridge.

Sumner believes the bear got in through a window he had left slightly open. The video captures the bear’s curious exploration of the apartment, first investigating the couch before moving on to the kitchen in search of food. A maintenance worker later spotted the bear resting on a bed.

“It got into the pantry and ate chips and peanuts but didn’t manage to get into the fridge,” Sumner told local TV station KCRA. He noted that while there was minimal damage, the experience was still quite frightening.

According to a spokesman from the Department of Fire and Wildlife, California is home to only black bears, which can come in various colors, including black, brown, blonde, and cinnamon. Bear sightings tend to increase during the summer months as more people spend time outdoors.

The National Park Service advises maintaining a safe distance from bears, avoiding sudden movements that could startle them, and being aware of your surroundings, especially in areas with known bear activity or food sources like berry bushes.

Bear attacks are rare and typically occur only if the bear feels threatened, is defending its cubs, or protecting its food.
