What started as an ordinary Sunday for Brian Spies quickly became a cause for concern when his young dog, Luna, went missing in Lotus, California.
On that day, Luna, a ten-month-old German Shepherd, was enjoying her usual time outdoors. When she didn’t return after some time, Spies began to worry.
Concerned that she might be hurt or in trouble, Spies enlisted the help of his friends to begin a search for Luna. They combed through the area, calling out her name and meandering through the nearby woods.

Despite their relentless effort, after several hours, they found no sign of Luna.
Spies couldn’t shake his growing anxiety. The region is home to many predators, and he feared the worst.
“We have bears, mountain lions, coyotes, foxes… we’ve kind of got them all,” Spies explained to KCRA 3, fearing that Luna might have been caught by a mountain lion.
As night fell, they were forced to pause their search, leaving Luna’s fate uncertain.

The following day brought an unexpected discovery. Luka Bogdanovich, a friend of Spies, was driving in the vicinity when he spotted something unusual.
Perched precariously on a slanted tree branch, about 25 feet above the ground, was what appeared to be a bundle of fur.
On closer inspection, it was confirmed to be Luna. Bogdanovich immediately called Spies, who rushed to the scene equipped with an extension ladder. Friends gathered to help, securing the ladder and preparing a sleeping bag below to catch Luna if needed.
When Luna saw her rescuers, her tail began to wag, a clear sign of relief. Spies carefully climbed the ladder to reach her. Emotion washed over him as he embraced his dog.

“I kind of reached up, grabbed her, and bear-hugged her and walked down the ladder with no hands, as carefully as possible,” Spies recounted.
Once safely on the ground, Luna snuggled into Spies, clearly relaxed after her little adventure.
Spies speculated that Luna had chased a squirrel up the tree and got stuck when she realized the height. Though she seemed tired afterward, she was back to her usual energetic self within a couple of days.
While Spies admired Luna’s athleticism, he hoped she had learned her lesson about risky climbs. What mattered most was that Luna was back where she belonged, safe and sound with the person who cherished her deeply.
