Mlilo, rescued from drought conditions in Swaziland earlier this year, experienced a long and challenging 22-month pregnancy.

Despite inconclusive tests, the zoo staff prepared for her potential pregnancy by providing essential resources in Swaziland and Dallas.

According to Dallas Zoo President and CEO Gregg Hudson, “The small risk of moving a potentially pregnant animal was far outweighed by the certain death she and her calf faced in Swaziland.”

Ellie’s playful first dip in the pool, shared on Facebook, showed the young elephant rolling in the water and clumsily stepping in and out, much to the delight of viewers.

Many fans eagerly asked when they could see Ellie in person, though zoo staff explained that the calf remains in a private area, bonding with his mother and herd before public introductions.

As Ellie grows, so will his pool, ensuring his playful spirit continues to be nurtured under the zoo’s careful watch. The zoo looks forward to welcoming him to its public exhibits once he’s ready.
