While drinking at a lake in Liwonde National Park, Malawi, a young elephant fought fiercely when a crocodile suddenly lunged from the water, locking its jaws around the elephant’s trunk.
Initially, the startled herd backed away as the young elephant swung its trunk desperately, trying to shake off the predator.

Moments later, however, another elephant from the group stepped in, charging at the crocodile and forcing it to release its grip.
The dramatic encounter was captured on video by Alexander Makanga, a biomedical scientist from Malawi, now residing in the UK.
Observing from a nearby boat, Makanga shared his reaction online, writing, “I did not realize the severity of the situation until I had finished recording. Insane. This happened just a few meters from the boat.”
The video, uploaded to YouTube, offers a rare glimpse of the intense interactions between these powerful animals.
