This time of year is crucial for bears as they bulk up for the long hibernation ahead. Adult grizzlies can weigh up to 180 kilos, feasting on plants and occasionally catching a marmot or two for extra sustenance.

With the warmer weather, the bears start to shed their winter coats. A mother bear demonstrates to her cubs how to get rid of excess fur by rubbing against the bark of a tree.
Attenborough’s narration draws attention to the adorable sight of bears “dancing” in the forest as they choose their favorite trees to scratch and rub against.

These trees are not random; bears travel long distances to reach their preferred scratching posts.
As they rub, they leave behind their distinctive scent, which serves as a signal to other bears and helps them avoid conflicts.
The scene crescendos with a grizzly bear pressing her back firmly against a tree, the music adding to the sense of movement and rhythm.
The valley depicted in the footage is home to 30 bears, all marking the trees to spread their scent and establish their presence.
This behavior is more than just a way to alleviate itches—it helps the bears communicate with each other and maintain harmony in their shared territory.
However, the bears’ dance with the trees is short-lived. As summer winds down, they must focus on gaining as much weight as possible to prepare for hibernation. The time for scratching and playing will soon give way to the serious business of survival.
