In a remarkable tale of loyalty and bravery, a dog named Heidi emerged as a hero when she saved her owner’s life after their boat sank off the coast of Queensland.
A passing fisherman spotted Heidi, a German Shepherd, swimming amidst the wreckage in Moreton Bay, including a gasoline tank, tackle box, and wetsuit.
The fishermen quickly alerted authorities, prompting a swift search and rescue operation to locate Heidi’s owner.
The Queensland Police deployed an extensive effort, utilizing resources such as the Rescue 500 helicopter, four police boats, a jet ski from Marine Safety Queensland, and assistance from the Volunteer Marine Coast Guard and Volunteer Marine Rescue.
Eventually, they found Heidi’s owner clinging to his capsized 4.1-meter boat.
The 63-year-old survivor recounted how his boat had lost power the previous night, leading to water ingress.
Remarkably, he managed to stay afloat for 15 hours while awaiting rescue. During this time, Heidi, in a display of unwavering loyalty, swam for approximately 11 hours in search of help.
Senior Sergeant Jay Bairstow from Brisbane Water emphasized the importance of boating safety, urging all boaties to be prepared for emergencies by wearing personal flotation devices and ensuring the proper functioning of safety equipment like EPIRBs.
Following her ordeal, Heidi received a clean bill of health from the vet and was provided with food and much-needed rest while awaiting her owner’s return.
In a heartwarming gesture, Queensland Police designated Heidi as an honorary police dog for her courageous actions.
This story is yet another testament to the unbreakable bond between humans and their canine companions, demonstrating again why dogs are man’s best friend.
