In Texas, a small, abandoned puppy sought refuge beneath Abigail’s car, crying out for help. The pup, later named Ellie, appeared frail and extremely thin, a clear sign of her struggles.
When Ellie finally ventured out from her hiding place, Abigail quickly secured a leash around her neck. Terrified, Ellie withdrew and became still with fear, in what Abigail called “turtle mode.”
Abigail’s first concern was Ellie’s health, so she rushed her to the veterinarian, fearing the possibility of parvo, a highly contagious and potentially deadly virus. Fortunately, the diagnosis was less severe.
“The vet told us Ellie had been eating a lot of garbage, which really upset her stomach. But they assured us she would be just fine in a few weeks,” Abigail shared with The Dodo.
Despite having survived on waste, Ellie had found the perfect person to aid her recovery.
At the vet’s office, Abigail discovered that Ellie was only about six months old, a mere puppy beneath her worn and weathered exterior. Even though her coat appeared dry and scaly, she was identified as a Golden Retriever mix.
Initially, Ellie was scared and unresponsive at Abigail’s home. “She was completely unresponsive for the first couple of days,” Abigail recounted. “But she learned we weren’t there to harm her. It was all about helping her feel safe enough to come out of her shell.”
After a few days, Ellie bravely explored outside. Her attention was immediately captured by a tennis ball.
“Once she saw the tennis ball, she was hooked. She wanted to play; there was a lively spirit within her. From that moment, her demeanor improved significantly,” Abigail noted.
Witnessing Ellie’s reawakened zest for life was a joyful experience. She gradually transformed into a lively and energetic dog, with her skin and coat health showing steady improvement.
“We made it a point to help her feel secure,” Abigail added.
Now an astonishing Golden girl, Ellie is far removed from the scared pup who hid under a car. She delights in car rides, sticking her head and paws out the window, and loves adventures to the beach. Her first beach outing, celebrating her recovery, was especially joyful.
“She started digging and got zoomies like crazy. She ran all over the beach, gazing at the ocean. She loved every moment. It was a monumental experience for her,” Abigail reminisced.
