Rescuing stray animals can often be challenging, and few understand this better than Donna Lochmann, who has dedicated over two decades to this cause with Stray Rescue of St. Louis in Missouri.
Donna frequently has to earn the trust of animals that have been let down by people, but her encounter with one particular pit bull, who transformed from a frightened stray to a lovable companion in mere minutes, was truly remarkable.

On Valentine’s Day, Donna received a call about a scared dog spotted in an industrial area. Arriving at the scene, she saw a nervous dog peering from behind a building. As Donna approached, the dog tried to flee but ended up trapped between the building and a fence.
“She was definitely looking for a way to get away from me, but there was no way out. She barked a couple of times, like a super-scared warning,” Donna shared with The Dodo.
Having saved many abandoned dogs over the years, Donna was surprised by this one’s unique reaction. The distressed dog cowered in fear, her tail tucked under her.
To calm her, Donna began gently tossing food and speaking kindly. “I knelt down so she didn’t feel so threatened and started talking to her. I tossed one sausage over to her, and she ate it,” Donna explained.

As Donna offered more sausages, the dog did something unexpected. She ignored the food and focused entirely on Donna.
“She passed right by the other sausages. When she got to me, she nuzzled her head right in my shirt, then she rolled over and looked up at me,” Donna recalled.
Even with her extensive experience, Donna was astonished by this affectionate gesture. The dog, soon named Cutie Pie, melted into Donna’s arms, understanding that she was finally in safe hands.
“It was so sweet, the way she looked up at me as if she were saying, ‘Thank you!’” Donna said.

After the rescue, Donna took Cutie Pie to the Stray Rescue of St. Louis facility, where she received care and attention including food, a bath, and a medical checkup.
Cutie Pie’s endearing nature quickly won over everyone at the facility. With a touch of love, she blossomed, her lively spirit shining brightly.
Soon after, Cutie Pie moved to a foster home that she adored. “She curls up in her bed as well as her little foster dog brother’s bed. She has the biggest, sweetest smile, she loves zooming around the yard… she is one special soul with infectious joy,” the rescue shared in a Facebook post.
Having endured so much, Cutie Pie is now surrounded by the love she so richly deserves.
