Helping scared stray dogs can be tricky, as their instinct is to avoid humans, and trying to assist them forcibly may create more problems than solutions. Patience is crucial in these situations; though it may take some time, the effort is always worthwhile.
By offering assistance, you’re not just rescuing a frightened animal; you’re also demonstrating that humans can be trusted, paving the way for them to connect with a loving family in the future. This is the ultimate aim of such rescues.

In Missouri, a rescuer named Donna faced this challenge when she discovered a frightened dog hiding in some bushes. Unsure of how to approach the situation, Donna devised a thoughtful plan. As a part of Stray Rescue of St. Louis, Donna went to the site determined to help, even if she was working alone.
Upon arriving, it was clear to Donna that the dog was terrified. She left food and water nearby, hoping the dog would be tempted to eat once she stepped back. Although the dog moved around the area, she ignored the bowls, remaining wary of the surroundings. Donna even set up a humane trap, but it failed to catch the cautious dog’s attention.
Realizing that she needed to be more proactive, Donna decided to approach the dog more closely. From the bushes, the dog barked nervously, but Donna persisted gently, trying to convey that she was not a threat. Eventually, with patience and persistence, Donna was able to put a leash on the dog. Although concerned the dog might bite, Donna was relieved when she didn’t.

With the leash on, the dog’s demeanor changed entirely, seemingly realizing she was safe at last. Donna then carefully placed her in a small kennel she had previously avoided and transported her to the shelter in Missouri.
At the shelter, staff discovered the dog had a broken leg, necessitating immediate medical attention. The cause was unclear, but it hinted at possible past abuse, which could explain her initial fear of humans. Now in safe hands, she will receive the care needed to recover and begin a new chapter.
The team at the Missouri shelter remains committed to nurturing her back to health and making a fresh start possible. Given her endearing nature, she has already won over many hearts. In time, she will likely be ready for adoption, with hopes that she finds a permanent, loving home where she can thrive.
