When Adri Herron, the president of Sanctuary Rescue in Midlothian, Virginia, opened an email with the intriguing subject “A newborn pit bull with no nose,” she was instantly drawn in.
The message came from a breeder uncertain about how to care for such a unique puppy.
Within 24 hours of her birth, the puppy began her journey to Sanctuary Rescue, setting off on a path marked by remarkable resilience and dedicated care.
This special puppy, soon to be named Goosie, was born without a nose, and her airways were located on the roof of her mouth.

Additionally, Goosie was diagnosed with pituitary dwarfism, meaning she would stay small, maintaining her puppy-like appearance throughout her life.
Sanctuary Rescue, a foster-based organization, embraced Goosie’s special needs wholeheartedly. Adri became her constant companion, toting the little pup everywhere during her first five weeks of life.
“She was always eager to explore, often wiggling out of the tote bag,” Adri recalled, amused by Goosie’s spirited nature. “I half-expected to be asked to leave places for bringing her in!”
Unlike typical puppies who transition from bottle-feeding at four weeks, Goosie enjoyed bottle-feeding up until 15 weeks, receiving the extra care essential for her health and safety.

Goosie’s fragility was a constant source of concern for Adri, with the puppy facing serious illnesses and requiring ICU stays on four occasions.
Each time fear of losing her loomed, but Goosie’s incredible tenacity saw her through, surprising and delighting her caregivers.
“The credit truly goes to her,” said Adri, noting that every veterinarian who met Goosie was astounded by her spirit.
As time went on, Goosie defied doubts about her survival. Reaching five pounds was a pivotal point, disproving skeptics and showcasing her potential to thrive.

With growth came a delightful personality and the confidence to match. Known as the diva of Sanctuary Rescue, Goosie’s lively demeanor and independence made a strong impression.
“She’s very independent and loves the company of other animals. The sound of ducks quacking and geese honking always catches her attention,” Adri shared.
Goosie also enjoyed playful wrestling matches with cats and Adri’s much larger dog, revealing a fearless curiosity that belied her petite size.

Despite never growing to look like a typical adult Pit Bull, Goosie has shown that happiness and fulfillment aren’t bound to physical form.
Adri admired, “There’s nothing cuter than a tiny pit bull puppy. I thought she was the most wonderful thing I’d ever seen!”
Surrounded by love and care, Goosie continues to thrive in her foster home. Her story highlights that every dog, regardless of size or physical differences, possesses a heart full of love and the ability to inspire and bring joy to those around them.
