A compassionate woman received a touching gesture of gratitude from a cat named Iluna, who had spent her entire life outdoors, for providing a safe haven for her and her unborn kittens.

Anne, a dedicated volunteer at Kat Zoekt Thuis, a Belgian animal rescue, was informed by a cat colony caregiver about a timid newcomer to their group. Despite appearing shy, the cat was clearly domesticated, hungry, and pregnant.

“After a week of earning her trust, the feeder managed to place her in a carrier and brought her to my door,” Anne recounted to Love Meow.

Upon arriving at her foster home, Iluna, a striking black and white feline, was overwhelmed by fear amidst the significant changes in her environment.

Anne ensured that she had a peaceful space to adjust, allowing Iluna the time she needed to feel at home.

“She seemed accustomed to humans, but indoor living was completely new to her. We suspect she was once a barn cat, left behind when she became pregnant,” Anne explained. “She was exhausted, underweight, dirty, and her nose bore scratches.”

Through attentive care, Anne cleaned Iluna’s eyes and nose and treated an infection, while providing a safe atmosphere. As Iluna acclimated to indoor life, she began showing trust, even letting Anne pet her and purring for the first time.

“She stayed wary until she found a window, where she could gaze outside. That’s when she started to relax,” Anne shared. “Iluna spent most of her first week perched on the windowsill.”

Gradually, Iluna began displaying affection toward Anne. She showed her appreciation with a friendly head bump after a while.

“She loved belly rubs, especially when she was being petted initially,” Anne happily noted. As time passed, Iluna felt confident enough to start eating independently.

In just two weeks, Iluna went into labor, grateful for the cozy nest and Anne’s comforting presence beside her. “The labor was seamless, and she let me stay with her throughout the process,” Anne reflected.

“Iluna is one of the most attentive mothers I’ve ever seen,” Anne praised. “Many new moms can be a bit clumsy, but not Iluna. She’s always aware of her kittens.”

“Her gentle nature ensures that her kittens are well-nourished and thriving,” Anne said. “While she’s very protective, she allows me to watch them but not touch. It’s tricky to check on the kittens, but Iluna handles most of their care.”

Over the subsequent weeks, the kittens will start to explore and play as they grow. Once they’re ready to be more independent, Iluna will enjoy more human companionship.

Iluna’s days of surviving outdoors are over. After her kittens are grown, she’ll be spayed and prepared for adoption into a loving home.
